Hello everyone,
You can use our site to search for opportunities that involve specific skills or focus on particular interest areas either by selecting a category of interest or doing a keyword search. To customize your search, follow these instructions:
-Log into your VolunteerMatch account
Click 'Find Opportunities'
-Enter your Location (it is best to enter your zip code or an exact address if you're looking for local opportunities)
-Enter a keyword(s) into the keyword field (the keywords should be specific to the type of opportunity you are looking for--e.g. 'math', 'tutor', 'reading' etc.)
-Select your interest area(s):
-Click on the 'Search' button
Scroll through the search results for an opportunity that matches your interests. Click on the organization title for additional details and then click 'I Want to Help!' We'll send an email to the nonprofit organization notifying them of your interest.
[NOTE: If you are looking for opportunities that can accommodate kids, teens, 55+ or groups make sure you indicate this by our 'Suitable For' filters. Check the corresponding boxes]
If you want to perform a more specified search, you'll want to check out our 'Advanced Search' tool.

I'd like to find volunteer opportunities within 20 miles from where I live. However, I'd like to filter out those volunteer opportunities that show up in my search that are for sending the volunteer to some other country. These are often multiple posts, sometimes many pages and a deterrent to finding an opportunity that may interest me. So, in my search can I filter out organizations that do not interest me?

I have been in many school programs as well, and a lot of the volunteer opportunities that i found were very beneficial for my schooling. I also love being able to post my volunteer experience on my resume, and help others within my community. A source that I have found very helpful was volunteercenter.com because they had a lot of volunteer opportunities listed in my home town.

I would like to volunteer in the weekends. Most of the organizations that i contacted are closed in the weekends. So, how can i search for a organization that is open in Weekends that requires volunteers? Or can you suggest me some organization that is looking for weekend volunteers?

Hi Matt,
My experience is that most people don't know what they want until they see it, and if you don't facilitate their ability to easily see it, they probably never will.
So the solution seems to be, make "Opportunity Interest Areas" the forefront, not some obscure side thing for those few people who click on the mysterious and frightening "Advanced" button.
Craigslist is ugly, I'll grant, but it works pretty damn well, doesn't it?
Step 1: Select interest category (On Craigslist that might be "Motorcycles and Scooters". On VolunteerMatch that might be "Homeless & Housing")
Step 2: If you want to further filter the search (On Craigslist, you probably would; On VolunteerMatch, you probably generally don't need to a whole lot, but sometimes you want to so it should be there just in case)
Step 3: Find what you're looking for.
Making broad-scope search the default doesn't seem to make a lot of sense for VolunteerMatch. It makes the results very often irrelevant in those many many cases when people aren't exactly sure what they want to search for.
So, my thinking it: Help guide people to their interests instead of just hoping they already know.

When I first started using the site I typed in key words that I would use to describe the type of work I wanted to do...for example I wanted to be an animal foster parent so I used word like: cats, dogs, pets, foster parent, adoption, veterinary, animal etc etc etc...

Hi Antonella.
After clicking "find opportunities" from the VolunteerMatch.org homepage, you'll see on the next page on the left hand side a heading that says "Narrow Your Results". The very first section titled "Show Me" will allow you to select Virtual Opportunites (these are opportunities that don't require you to be in a specific location in order to perform the tasks). By clicking on this you will update your search results to all the Virtual Opportunities on VolunteerMatch.org. Using the virtual opportunity selection along with a keyword like "translate" should provide some opportunities of interest.

Thanks for your question! I'll definitely pass along the feedback about volunteer opportunities that look local but are actually sending volunteers along to another country.
To find opportunities that appeal to you, I'd suggest using the advice above to use keywords to tailor your search more specifically. Hope this helps!

I'd like to use negative keywords (Ex: -hospital ) to exclude opportunities that match those keywords.
It is not easy to see the addresses or names of listed organizations in search results with gray text on a white background.
