I run a small poetry organization - we hold poetry open mics, poetry slams, and other similar events. Because of the small scale of the enterprise (only a few thousand dollars pass through the org each year), it doesn't make much sense to me right now to go through the headaches and paperwork of applying for non-profit status, especially since I foresee the org running at a loss into the future (I support it out of pocket).
I am not operating it for profit and I never will, but it isn't a non-profit. Can I list here?

Hello Jason,
VolunteerMatch does not 'place' volunteers, but rather provides the platform for organizations to recruit volunteers through posting 'Volunteer Opportunities'. Volunteers reach out to offer their services at their convenience. For more clarification, please see below:
VolunteerMatch Policy On Individuals Seeking Personal Volunteers
To register your organization, please go to VolunteerMatch Organization Registration ...and fill out all of the required forms.
In order to complete your registration, you may need to submit information about your organization including a mission statement and description of services, an EIN (Employer Identification Number, also known as a Tax ID), and current volunteer opportunities.
I hope this helps!

My organization is a Rotary Club that receives grants from Rotary International which is a 501c so we should fit under this category:
Organizations fiscally sponsored by another organization with 501(c) status
Please approve my application so I can recruit volunteers. Thanks!-
Hello Tiffany,
As we discussed yesterday, VolunteerMatch allows organizations using 'parent affiliate' information to register with our site. However, you will need to supply the EIN of the parent affiliate and proof of your organization's affiliation. We can accept this information via email [support@volunteermatch.org] or via fax at 415-241-6872.

I am Rick O'Connor and I work for RTI here in Raleigh. The Census Bureau has contracted RTI to interview American host parents of exchange students to see how to improve the 2020 Census in this field. I would like to send you a flier for these parents to review and call me if they might be interested in participating in the study. We will pay the parents $40.00 for the one hour study... Please advise.

I am a one person business, that is new, not making an great sums of money on the retail side(created as a micro business). However, I am cultivating a giving fund from my own pockets and need volunteers to help me to grow to official non profit status. It would be great if VM would approve those small(entrepreneurs that are actively growing a fund from their small existing retail(online) business. I am grassroots.

I am very interested in using VolunteerMatch to recruit volunteers for my organization. We work with a number of different non-profits, but my organization, The San Francisco Marathon, is not technically a non profit organization. The volunteer opportunities available are for our Ultramarathon at the end of July which is campaign to create awareness and support for 8 different charities. Can I still use VolunteerMatch?

Hello,
I am a volunteer for a local consortium of Non-profit organizations that comes together as a "taskforce" against homelessness. We are a federally recognized body that coordinates homeless services in our County, however we are not a formal 501(c)(3) organization yet (we will be doing this in early 2013). We do host events though and have an upcoming community resource event for homeless individuals and families and we were seeking volunteers to serve lunch and breakfast at the event. With these circumstances, how could I register our organization and post for our volunteering opportunity? Thank you,

Hello Everett,
Good question!
Our mission is to "strengthen communities by making it easier for good people and good causes to connect," and we try to live up to that standard by promoting a wide variety of volunteer needs and issues on our site.
VolunteerMatch does not discriminate on the basis of race, sex, color, religion, national origin, age, physical/mental handicap, or sexual orientation. Organizations that post their opportunities on VolunteerMatch are offered 27 interest areas to choose from to categorize their opportunities from. By offering such a large volume of choices, we aim to make it as easy as possible for volunteers to seek and find relevant and interesting opportunities and get involved. In generating our list of categories, we try to offer as broad and all-encompassing a menu as possible, without creating an overwhelming list.
Please remember that even if you are not interested in volunteering for something that is specifically promoted on our homepage, there are more than 50,000 available opportunities on VolunteerMatch. Please take a moment to search and sign up for an opportunity that is meaningful and rewarding to you, and that will help build and enrich our communities.
You are welcome to check out our terms of service. Let me know if you have any more questions.

The Kitt Peak National Observatory is located atop Kitt Peak, 55 miles SW of Tucson, on the Tohono O’odham Native American Reservation. We have the largest collection of optical telescopes of any observatory anywhere in the world.
I am trying to add an organization to Volunteer Match, but when I get to the “pick a category” section, I get stuck.
NONE of the categories on the list apply to us. We are the Kitt Peak National Observatory’s Visitor Center. Categories that might apply to us are:
Science Museum
Museum
Education and Public Outreach
Education
Science Education
Astronomy
The pull-down menu lists “Education and Literacy.” This is the only category that has an education component, but we do not teach anyone how to read. There is a “Computers and Technology” category, both of which we use here, but that is not what our volunteers would be working with.
I would love to list our organization with your web site and see if we might benefit from it and find some volunteers, but until the category list has at least one thing that applies to us, we simply can’t.
I am actually VERY surprised that the simple category of “Museum” is not a choice. There are hundreds, if not thousands of museums out there.

Hello -
The center I wish to register is a Multilingual Center within a school distract. All employees are salaried through the district but we also do fundraising and receive grants in an effort to run additional programs, and are in need of volunteers as tutors/event coordinators. We are not a non-profit as we do not have 401(c)3 status but we are not found if I list us as a school.
Which is the more appropriate course of action: to list us as a non-profit despite our non-401(c)3 status or to list the school at which we are basd?

I work with an all-volunteer group to put on an annual event (www.seattlegivecamp.org) when tech volunteers help non-profits with projects. I'd like to post our organization and event, but I can't get through your registration process because we're don't fit into your categories. Any advice?

You might also want to try craigslist.org. Lots of organizations that don't qualify to use VolunteerMatch have great success on Idealist and Craigslist.

I'm trying to get people to help with logistics at a one-day event at the University of Las Vegas (UNLV) I don't know which organization type to use. Selecting education doesn't work.
The event is not for profit, but we are not an official non-profit (we're not anything; this is just students putting on an event)

Hello Emily,
Without having any additional information about your organization I believe you would qualify as an incorporated state level nonprofit. Select 'Nonprofit' and 'Other' in the registration process.
I hope this helps!
